Liverpool Ratings: Van Dijk 5/10 as title hopes return to West Ham

Liverpool's remaining hopes of winning the English Premier League title dwindled today, Saturday, after a 2-2 draw against West Ham United at the London Stadium.

An uneventful first half produced few chances until Luis Diaz hit the post after some positive individual play, but it was the Hammers who took the lead moments later when Jarrod Bowen headed home after a corner in the final minutes of the first half.

The Reds responded quickly after the break through Andy Robertson. It gave much-needed momentum to Jurgen Klopp's side, who took the lead in the 65th minute when Cody Jacobo's point-blank shot deflected off several West Ham players before going into the net. However, Liverpool could only hold on until the 77th minute. Bowen again linked up with England international Michail Antonio to score the equalizer.

The triple substitution which included the introduction of Mohamed Salah ultimately wasn't enough as Liverpool dropped more points. The team are now two points behind league leaders Arsenal, having played a game more and with just three matches remaining before the end of the season.

DF Jarrell Quansah, 5 – A poor pass gave the ball away which led to a West Ham goal from the corner, then failed to mark Antonio on a Bowen cross to equalize.

DF Trent Alexander-Arnold, 6 – Tried to get Liverpool into the right areas by looking to open up the attackers from his inside-out position, and almost got an assist in the second half by producing a long, intricate pass to Alexis McAllister.

MF Wataru Endō, 6 – Recovered the ball well in some counter-attacking situations and was often on the ball for Klopp's side, passing it quickly to the more advanced midfielders.

MF Ryan Gravenberch, 5 – Gave the ball away more than he would have liked on the day, even though he tried to play it as gradually as possible.

FW Luis Díaz, 7 – Got off to a good start looking to isolate defenders and was unlucky to hit the post. He made a strong effort to get two more chances in the second half, but the goalkeeper blocked them both.

FW Cody Gakpo, 7 – The Dutch international managed to keep the ball in advanced areas to help others come into play, and it was his effort on goal that was scored after several deflections to give the lead to Liverpool 2-1.

FW Harvey Elliott, 6 – Careless in possession at first, but started paying more attention as the match progressed. It could have been a better performance if his chance in the first half had been in the side net. Hit the top of the woodwork after the break.

Alternatives

Joe Gomez (Alexander-Arnold, 79') n/r – Down for Alexander-Arnold, who is still in great shape. Extend the play on the right flank when he can. A significant intervention stopped a sophisticated attack in the 94th minute.

Darwin Nunez (Endo, 79') N/R - Made a positive run for Mohamed Salah, who failed to pick him out on the break. They took up positions inside the penalty area to provide the opportunity for crosses.

Mohamed Salah (Diaz, 79') N/R – Came in after a heated exchange with Klopp. He almost got an assist a few minutes later but his cross was blocked by Vladimir Coufal. A promising break came to nothing when his pass sailed past Nunez.

Dominik Szoboszlai (Quansah, 90+1') N/R – There wasn't enough time for the Hungarian international to make an impact on the match. His pass to McAllister was very powerful in the 95th minute and led to a counter-attack for West Ham.
